«When traffic fines appear from everywhere»

Visão - 12th March 2017, Rui Antunes

«In Maria Câmara Pestana's office, a bookcase full of dossiers covers a wall. “I have more than three thousand active procedures here. New ones arrive everyday”, says the lawyer. Most of them related to speeding followed by, with a wide margin, of others for improper use of the mobile phone while driving or alcohol consumption. It is a reality that reflects the hierarchy of serious and very serious infractions (those that, in addition to a fine, give rise to the disqualification from driving, the so-called accessory sanction) verified throughout the country.»

«They call them “safa-multas”»

Expresso - 10th March 2009, Ricardo Marques

«They call them “safa-multas”, but they don't like it. The police accuse them of doing everything to delay the proceedings, but they deny it. The main issue, say lawyers, is to ensure that everyone has a defense. The clientele continues to increase.»

«Maria Câmara Pestana raises another issue that “repeatedly violates drivers’ rights. When they are detected, they are confronted with two options: they pay the fine or are left without the documents. It is very rare for agents to inform people that there is a third alternative, a small cross that is barely visible.”  This option corresponds to the voluntary deposit of the minimum amount of the fine and allows the defense to be presented within the next 15 days.»

«The response of lawyers heard by Expresso is threefold. “People don't conform. They are simply not informed”, begins Maria Câmara Pestana, who defends more and better information.»
